CESARE BORGIA (1475-1507)
Borgia, Cesare (also known as "Duca Valentino") - a son of Rodrigo Borgia, who later become the Pope Alexander VI, and Vanozza Catanei. He studied at the universities of Perugia and Pisa and he developed a great interest in military architecture. With papacy election of his father he began to play an important role in Vatican. After his brother`s death in 1498 he take over secular matters of the family. He captured Imola Forli, Caesena, Collona, Rimini, Pesaro, Faenza, Urbino, Camerino, Piombino and Elba and so established authority over most of the Papal State. Pope Alexander appointed him Duke of Romagna and Cesare set about the creation of a new state. His career was mostly finished by the death of his father in 1503, when he fell into disgrace with new pope Julius II (first pope after Alexander VI was Pius III who died suddenly and then Julius II – enemy of the Borgia family – was elected). In 1506 Cesare escaped at the court of king of Navarre, where he died on March 1507.
