Platonic Academies

Platonic Academies were established in the 15th century, when the universities were loosing its role as centers of intellectual life. These were not schools in classical meaning but meeting points of artists, scholars and patrons. Platonic academies became initiators of the greatest achievements in art and science. Platonic Academy was opened in Florence in 1462 under the patronage of Cosimo de' Medici. Its leader became Marcilio Ficino, among the first members were Cristoforo Landino, Angelo Poliziano and Pico della Mirandola.
