GIROLAMO SAVONAROLA (1452-1498)
Dominican preacher in Florence at the end of 15th century who had a big influence on his contemporaries with his fanatical sermons. On February 7, 1497 he was bidding the citizens of Florence to burn their splendid garments, furniture, books, paintings and other luxury items. Among them were also artist such as Lorenzo Credi, who burned his nudes. He was banished from Florence in 1497 because of his verbal attacks on corruption and moral profligacy of the Church. In 1498 he was accused of heresy and publicly strangled and burnt at the stake.
