"From the mid-1460s until his death, Andrea del Verrocchio was the preeminent sculptor in Florence, and one of the leading artists in Europe." - Andrew Butterfield, The Sculptures of Andrea del Verrocchio, 1997, Yale University Press, New Haven & London)

He was a sculptor and a painter who allegedly acclaimed that his painter's days are over when he saw Leonardo's angel on his painting Baptism of Christ. He was well educated and he could read Latin. Among his pupils were Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Pierugino, and Luca Signorelli. His proceeds were sculptors such as Nanni di Banco, Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Donatello. After Donatello's death he became the Medici's court artist.

1434/37

was born in Florence as Andrea di Michele Cione to Michele and Gemma Cione. His father was a fornaciaio and a member of the stoneworkers' guild. His older brother Simone was a monk in the Vallombrosian order and became the abbot of San Salvi, Montescalari and San Fedele di Poppi.

1452

in a quarrel with other teenagers Verrocchio hit one of them with a stone on the temple and he died thirteen days after.

1458

Little is known about his apprenticeship. He was a pupil of Antonio Dei goldsmith's workshop before 1458. Possibly, his teachers were also Francesco di Luca Verrocchio, a wealthy goldsmith and his brother Fra Giuliano Verrocchio, master of theology at the University of Florence.

1461

His first record as an independent artist

1464

he begun to work for Medici. They assured him two commissions: the bust of the Medici's banker Francesco Sasseti and a new bell for Dominican convent of San Marco (supported by Medici).

1465

received the commission for the tomb of Cosimo de' Medici in church of San Lorenzo in Florence. He finished it before 22 October 1467 when Cosimo il Vecchio was reburied in new grave.

1467

- David; made for Medici.

- Christ and St. Thomas for Orsanmichele; commissioned by the Universita della Mercanzia (there was Medici in the background again). The whole sculpture was placed in the Mercanzia's niche at Orsanmichele on 21 June 1483.

1469

In spring he traveled to Venice to buy high-quality copper for the orb at the top of the lantern of Santa Maria della Fiore.

He painted Lucrezia Donati and Medici's standard for a joust, both for Lorenzo de' Medici.

1470

begun to work on the tomb of Giuliano and Piero de' Medici.

1472

He joined the reformed artists' guild Compagnia di San Luca .

- Baptism; made for his brother's monastery San Salvi.

1481-86

He received a commission for Gatamelata. He probably visited Venice in 1483.

1486

In spring he moved to Venice.

1488

died in Venice in June and was buried in family's tomb in Florence. Inscription on the tomb was (after Vasari): SER MICHELIS DI CIONIS ET SQUORUM AND HIC OSSA JACENT ANDREAE VERROCHII QUI OBIIT VENETIIS MCCCLXXXVIII.
