This painting was commissioned by Prince Regente Francesco de Medici and shows an Allegory of Happiness. The double-sided head on the picture, which is not obvious at first sight, is Janus. He is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. He marked beginnings and endings, and thus the first month of the year was named after him.
