This painting was commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici as a gift for King Francis I of France. It is full of homoerotic allusions, such as chimera or the position or Cupid. Chimera, a monster with human head, lion's body and dragon's tail, was a symbol of homosexuality (‘as unnatural-sexuality’) in Bronzino's time.
