Full title: 'Portrait of Giovanni (?) Arnolfini and his Wife'. The painting is known also as 'Marriage of Giovanni (?) Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami (?).
Jan van Eyck signed himself in two ways on the Arnolfini Portrait – in writing and in painting. He inscribed on the wall Johannes de eyck fuit hic / 1434 (Jan van Eyck was here 1434) and confirmed the statement with the reflection in the mirror, below the inscription. Reflection shows two figures, one of them is probably the painter himself. This is one of the first self portraits, painted as an image within an image. The same motif is used also by Master of Flemalle (Robert Campin) on the left wing of his Werl Altarpiece (1438) and Hans Memling in the Diptych of Maarten Nieuwenhove (1487).
