Ecclesiastical Paraments of the order of the Golden Fleece (cartoons)
Such set of liturgical paraments, also known as a chapelle, comprise three copes and two altar hangings.
Between 1433 and 1442 Robert Campin designed three embroidered copes commissioned by Philip the Good. “These copes were probably produced in the workshop of Thierry du Chastel, an embroider who originally came from Paris. The vestment, worn at the prayer services of the order of the Golden Fleece, may be regarded as an artistic response to the Ghent Altarpiece by the van Eyck brothers, completed in 1432.
… The figures of the Deesis on the hoods of the copes are variations of the corresponding figures on the open Ghent Altarpiece probably created by Hubert van Eyck (?). The most striking similarities are between the two figures of Saint John, especially in terms of pose and facial type." (Felix Thurleman, Robert Campin, A monographic study with a critical catalogue, Prestel)
The Cope of Mary features the archangel Gabriel, the Cope of Christ features the archangel Michael and the Cope of Saint John features the archangel Raphael, in the first row.
