This panel is a fragment from the predella of the Guelfi Altarpiece painted for the church of San Domenico in Siena. The altar is now in Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence.
Unusual symbolic representation of creation and expulsion from paradise express the beginning of renaissance understanding of basic premises and religious truths. Creation of heaven and earth is depicted through concentric circles with zodiac on a circumference – microcosm as a small stage representation of macrocosm. An expulsion from paradise is depicted differently from others representations of the same motif: there is no horrifying god pointed his finger at the sinners but he looks more like a guide showing Adam and Eva the path to the Earth, and they are not terrified as usual but seem exiting and curious.
The orange trees and flowers below them are similar to that of Botticelli’s Primavera.
