Dedicatory stele-front view
raised by by the praetorian commander Lucius Flavius Aper
|
 | | | | The front side shows two men standing around the fire-altar while shaking right hands as they agreed on an oath. They hold a dagger with probably bull’s meat, which a raven is pecking. The figure on the left, wearing a radiant crown, is Heliodromus pertaining to the sixth grade. It seems that this stele represents a transition from one grade to another, in this case from the fifth to the sixth grade. This idea is proved also by the images on the sides that represent the symbols of those two grades. |
