He began his early apprenticeship in his father's goldsmith workshop when he was thirteen years old. He made the first self portrait (his oldest preserved picture) when he was thirteen years old and inscribed in the upper left side: This I drew, using a mirror; it is my own likeness, in the year 1484, when I was still a child / Albrecht Durer.
