Durer Albrecht - oil paintings
(Nuremberg, 1471 - Nuremberg, 1528)
German
He was born in Nuremberg to Albrecht Durer, the Elder and Barbara Durer (born Holper). Nuremberg was in his times a centre of Germany – in intellectual, artistic and business sense. In 1486 he began three years apprenticeship at the painter and woodcut illustrator Michael Wolgemut. He created the first self-portrait in European history of art produced as an independent painting ('Self portrait with Sea Holly', 1493). Durer made an inscription at the top of the painting: My affairs will go as ordained on high.
