Notke, Bernt

Bernt Notke of Lubeck, a sculptor and a painter, was one of the most-known artists in northern Europe in the second half of the 15th century. He worked mostly in Germany (Lubeck) and in Baltic area (Sweden, Denmark and Norway). His oak wood sculpture Saint George and the Dragon, commissioned as a memory on the victory of Sweden over Danes, is considered one of the most valuable medieval sculptures in northern Europe.
