Pesellino, Francesco
born as Francesco di Stefano
(Florence, 1422-1457)
Italian, Florentine
He was a son of the painter Stefano di Francesco. After his father’s early death, he lived with his grand father, the painter Giuliano d’Arrigo, named il Pesello. He held a workshop in Florence, where Pesellino probably got his first practical experiences. Soon he began his apprenticeship in the workshop of Filippo Lippi. In 1442 he already collaborated with the master on the painting Madonna and Child Enthroned with St Francis, St Damian, St Cosmas and Antony of Padua (The Medici Novitiate Altarpiece).
