The three-quarter portrait (look pointed into the viewer and often including arms) which had been through Robert Campin, Jan Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden known in the northern European countries in the first half of the 15th century, appeared in Italy in 1470s with Sandro Botticelli's and Leonardo da Vinci's paintings.
The painter’s self portrait is usually represented looking out of the picture, as if seeking to establish an eye contact with the viewer. Besides an obvious facial resemblance with Botticelli’s self-portrait, in Adoration of the Magi (Florence, Galeria degli Uffizi), Portrait of a Man with a Medal also bearing this characteristics. |
