Portrait of a Man and Portrait of a woman (London National Gallery) are most probably a pair who originally formed a diptych. The panels are the same size and they were almost certainly painted at the same time. X-radiography of both panels revealed differences in the employment of oil painting technique. Portrait of a Woman is regarded as Campin's work and Portrait of a Man as the work of one of his students.
Half-length cutting with stress on almost realistically painted face is typical for this kind of portraits. The cutting slowly becomes bigger and the hands of the sitter which have the same cutting as the face are included. A neutral, monochrome background which emphasizes the expression of the sitter is also very typical for these portraits. The eyes of the sitter are not directed at the observer yet, as happened in Jan van Eyck's portraits.
