This painting was hanging in scrittoio of Lorenzo il Magnifico (recorded in an inventory of 1492). It was painted for Cardinal Albergati (identified in the inscription on the letter on the table).
The inscription on the jar (Tyriaca) denotes that there was kept an antidote for snakebite.
