The rediscovery of the human body during the Renaissance stimulated interest in scientific exploration of the human anatomy. On the other hand Medicine remained uniquely in the domain of “quacks” and charlatans, far into The Age of Reason. It was universally believed that epilepsy was caused by a stone in the head, and curable only if surgically removed. This operation was usually performed on the street, in the market place, at fairs and such a happening provided entertainment for the crowds.
