Left wing reverse: Saint John the Baptist with the Baptism of Christ

This Triptych was commissioned by Jan Floreins, also known as Van der Rijst, a member of monastic community of Bruges’ Saint John’s Hospital. He is portrayed on the left side in the central panel, dressed in a black habit and reading a book.
The myth of the sick Memling who depicted himself wearing a patient’s bonnet and peering through the window on the right side of the central panel arose during the eighteenth century. But in the nineteenth century, the figure of Saint John the Baptist on the reverse side of the left wing was held to be a self-portrait of the artist, because Jacob Oost the Elder made an engraving of it, which he identified that way.
