Verrocchio, Andrea del
born as Andrea di Michele Cione
(Florence, 1434/37 - Venice, 1488)
Italian, Florentine
He was a sculptor and a painter who allegedly acclaimed that his painter's days were over when he saw Leonardo's angel on his painting Baptism of Christ. He was well educated and he could read Latin. Among his pupils were Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Pierugino, and Luca Signorelli. His proceeds were sculptors such as Nanni di Banco, Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Donatello. After Donatello's death he became the Medici's court artist.
