Hans Memling about 1475-1480
Oil on panel; diameter 17.5 cm (painted surface), diameter 24.8 cm (with frame)
New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art
This prototype of Virgo lactans was probably derived from the full-sized Madonna and Child (Frankfurt, Staedelsches Kunstinstitut) made by Robert Campin, about 1430.
The painting and the frame are made from a single piece of wood.
