This is the first version of two almost identical paintings; the second version is to be found in the National Gallery in London.
The Virgin of the Rocks has a very unusual iconography. The main character of the picture – angel Gabriel points at him with his finger – is Saint John the Baptist, and not the infant Jesus as usual. Angel Gabriel is depicted like a chimera (we could see his animal leg in the right lower corner of the picture) that resembles on Bronzino’s figure from his Allegory of Lust.
