| This iconographical type, in which Christ is supported by the Virgin, is not a common one – in is in fact a combination of two motifs, the Pieta and the Man of Sorrows. In the background there are instruments of Passion (cross with dark purple robe; post with rope, rods and flails; cane and sponge, the spear, the hammer and nails), persons (from top to bottom on the left: Peter with Caiaphas’ servant-girl, Judas with a purse around his neck, Annas and Caiaphas; on the right: Pilate and Herod, and probably of one of the soldier’s head) and gestures. |
