 | | | The panel with Saint John the Baptist and the donor Heinrich von Werl was the left wing of a triptych - Werl Altarpiece.
Two wings of the Werl Altarpiece were mostly attributed to Robert Campin, but latter discoveries of underdrawings in the Werl Altarpiece and in the Miraflores Altarpiece led to the conclusion that the author was Rogier van der Weyden. Striking resemblance between the position of the hand of John the Baptist in the left wing of the Werl Altarpiece and the hand of Christ in the right wing of the Miraflores Altarpiece indicates at the same painter of both panels.
Reflection in the mirror shows two additional figures, one of them is probably the painter himself. This motif (an artist’s signature) was already used by Jan van Eyck in his double portrait of the Arnolfini in 1434. |
