Weyden, Rogier van der
(Tournai, 1399/1400 - Brussels, 1464)
Netherlandish
Rogier van der Weyden was, according to the register of painters’ guild, a student of Robert Campin between 1427 and 1432. It is interesting that he already use the title maistre in 1426, before he started his apprenticeship in Campin’s workshop. The title, which indicated the free master painter, can not be used before the completion of the study: “There has been considerable debate about the documents recording that one ‘Maestre Rogier de la Pasture’ received a gift of wine from the city of Tournai on 17 November 1426. The gift may have been made to mark Rogier’s marriage around the same time to Elisabeth Goffaert from Brussels.” (Felix Thurleman, Robert Campin, A monographic study with a critical catalogue, Prestel) He also got paid independently for some paintings as early as 1427/28 when he was still at Campin.
After he left Campin’s workshop he created many works which refer explicitly to the works by Jan van Eyck. Because of this and Vasari’s writings, many scholars suppose that Rogier was a student of Jan van Eyck, but there are no surviving documents about it.
